Are Liposuction Results Permanent?

My Surgery Guide
Nov 5, 2021

Liposuction is pretty amazing. With just one procedure, you can remove unwanted fat in isolated parts of the body — eliminating insecurities or helping you sculpt the physique of your dreams. If you’ve already had liposuction, or if you’re still considering the procedure, you might be wondering: can my fat return after liposuction?

It’s an understandable question — and with liposuction being one of the world’s most common procedures, it’s one that gets asked a lot. So what’s the truth? Can your fat come back after liposuction?

Well, yes. If you’ve had liposuction, there is a chance that fat will return to the impacted areas.

However, this doesn’t have to be the case! If you follow a few rules, you can be sure that your results will last permanently.

Let’s break down why your fat might come back — and what you can do to prevent it.

Why Isn’t Liposuction Permanent?

To understand this, we need to briefly explain how liposuction works.

While there are many methods to go about doing it, every method involves removing fat cells from a specific area of the body using some combination of a cannula and aspirator, better understood as a thin tube and a suction device. This permanently removes fat cells from the body and makes it difficult for them to return.

If you manage to maintain your post-liposuction weight through diet and exercise, you will find that your results will, in fact, be permanent.

But liposuction does not remove all the fat cells from your body — or even a specific area.

What that means in practical terms is that if you gain weight, especially a considerable amount of weight, you’ll find the area where you had liposuction becoming fatter and flabbier.

For those concerned about their body ratio and who utilized liposuction to achieve a desired body shape, you will find that with mild weight gain, your body shape will remain at a similar ratio to your post-procedure body.

Anything beyond mild weight gain and you run the risk of fat cells developing throughout the body, including the area where a liposuction has occurred.

All of this said, as there are physically less fat cells in an area where liposuction has occurred, one’s body does tend to keep a reasonably similar shape, even with substantial post-liposuction weight gain.

How Do I Make My Liposuction Permanent?

Weight maintenance is key to keeping your post-liposuction body.

There are many ways to do this, with most involving diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes.

First, you can begin an exercise routine. This does not need to be as strenuous as it sounds — no one is expecting you to become a bodybuilder just because you had a bit of lower back fat removed!

Exercise can simply mean including more walking in your day-to-day life. You can also join local classes, or see if there is a running or exercise group you can join in your area.

Next, you can monitor your intake of calories and processed foods. By moderately reducing calories and limiting processed food consumption, you develop healthy eating habits that will last long-term — not as a diet, but as a better way of living your life.

Finally, make sure that you are drinking enough water, and make sure to listen to your doctor’s post-liposuction instructions!

All of these elements will work in tandem to ensure that your liposuction results will stay with you for a lifetime.

Conclusion

As one of the most common procedures performed in the United States and beyond, liposuction is incredibly safe and can be very transformative for those who undergo the procedure. However, steps must be taken to ensure these changes are permanent! By following our advice and the advice of your doctor, you’ll be well on your way to long-term liposuction success!
